By focusing on Canadian-made materials, the program seeks to bolster domestic manufacturing and create jobs within the country, aligning with broader economic goals.

This initiative is part of a larger federal commitment to tackle the housing affordability crisis in Canada. The government has previously introduced measures such as the Housing Accelerator Fund and the Affordable Housing Fund to support the construction and renovation of affordable housing units. However, critics have raised concerns about the effectiveness of these programs, suggesting that they may inadvertently support market rental housing developments rather than dedicated non-market housing.
